Urgent Prayer Request

Last night Our good friend and Aussie administrator Marg Godwin was in a serious car accident. She has some crushed vertebrae and other injuries. She is in a bad condition. The doctors say it's a miracle shes not gone home to be with the Lord or paralyzed. Please keep Marg in your constant prayers.

Surprise Visit By Jacob

Jacob Prasch will be flying into Joberg for a one off visit and will be visiting Elijah ministries for two sessions. This will be the last opportunity to see Jacob till June 2008. So why not come along to Elijah and give your support.

Part Two

Power in Action

1 Thessalonians ch1 v5 ‚   "how that our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much assurance; even as ye know what manner of men we showed ourselves toward you for your sake."

What did Paul mean by "For our gospel did not come to you in word only"? How could he communicate the good news of Jesus Christ apart from words? After all, faith comes by hearing according to Romans 10:17. What I believe Paul is saying is important for the church and what I believe Paul is saying, is that proclamation, fancy words, clever language and convincing talk are just one part of what can be termed evangelism or mission and is intrinsic to a life poured out.

When we picture the stereotype evangelist, particularly on television, we see someone charismatic, articulate, dramatic, maybe even theatrical, giving a great oratory performance and then an alter call. But this was not the experience of the early church and this was not Paul's experience with the Thessalonians. In Acts 17 we see that Paul reasoned with the people in the synagogues and that this led to persecution and Paul having to flee to Berea at night.

Humanly speaking, his impact on Thessalonica was negligible at face value; there was no great revival as the modern church nowadays understands revival; no massive waves of repentance and conversion reported, no great miracles recorded, just a few were persuaded and a chase out of town. And yet, from the city of Corinth, Paul could later write to a lively growing church in words of great joy concerning its growth and witness.

Something had happened there, which went beyond words. This, I believe, is the reason Paul distances himself from the allegation that he, Timothy and Silas came with a fancy speech or mere words. The evidence indicates that the gospel they brought went beyond mere human proclamation. My friends, we can learn so much from this.

Let me bring to you two points. Firstly notice Paul says "our gospel, did not come to you in word only"- our gospel. The gospel they preached was very much a part of their lives. They not only spoke it, they lived it. They had ownership of it in a very special personal way. There was no disassociation with the truth in any other area of their lives. Today so often the western life is compartmentalized. What and who you are in the work place sometimes bares little resemblance to the person you are at home or within the community of believers; we are all guilty of this.

Secondly, it came to the Thessalonians not just in word. The people sharing the gospel were not all mouth, using a Mancunian term of phrase. They were not Christians spouting empty clich ƒ ©s, which sadly we often hear today. No, these men were the genuine article who were prepared to live open, transparent, sacrificial lives for all to see, hear and touch. What an example for the Christian today and what an example they were to the Thessalonican church.

Paul writes in ch 1 v 6 "you also became imitations of us and the Lord". And if we want to know how to walk as Christian's we can find no better example.

Look at Paul's life. Look at his sacrifice. Look at the way he shared the gospel. Look at his thankfulness in all situations. Look at the way he carried his cross for the Lord. Beaten, shipwrecked, fighting beasts at Ephesus, imprisoned, often poor, often slandered, and yet full of the joy and power of the Holy Spirit. The world is looking for the genuine and how it longs to see Christians who are who they say they are. Paul's living example can best be summed up in just one paragraph of scripture.

2 Corinthians 11:16-30 says

"I say again, let no man think me foolish; but if ye do, yet as foolish receive me, that I also may glory a little. 17 That which I speak, I speak not after the Lord, but as in foolishness, in this confidence of glorying. 18 Seeing that many glory after the flesh, I will glory also. 19 For ye bear with the foolish gladly, being wise yourselves. 20 For ye bear with a man, I he bringeth you into bondage, if he devoureth you, if he taketh you captive, if he exalteth himself, if he smiteth you on the face. 21 I speak by way of disparagement, as though we had been weak. Yet whereinsoever any is bold (I speak in foolishness), I am bold also. 22 Are they Hebrews? so am I. Are they Israelites? so am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? so am I. 23 Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as onebeside himself) I more; in labors more abundantly, in prisons more abundantly, in stripes above measure, in deaths oft. 24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. 25 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day have I been in the deep; 26 in journeyings often, in perils of rivers, in perils of robbers, in perils from my countrymen, in perils from the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; 27 in labor and travail, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. 28 Besides those things that are without, there is that which presseth upon me daily, anxiety for all the churches. 29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is caused to stumble, and I burn not? 30 If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things that concern my weakness".

Truly his was a life poured out.

So if the gospel did not come only in words, how also did it come? V5 says "The gospel came in power.

The gospel is supernaturally powerful. Romans 1 v 16 says-

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek".

Paul had a choice of six Greek words representing power but the word he chose in both Thessalonians and Romans was 'dunamis'. The very word we derive dynamite from. Vine calls it 'Power in action'. This is not just a description of a destructive force, dynamite doesn't do it justice, no, its meaning has to do with ability and capability. Strong puts it this way

doo'-nam-is ; from (1410) (du>namai); force (literal or figurative); specially miraculous power (usually by implication a miracle itself): " ” ability, abundance, meaning, might (-ily, -y, -y deed), (worker of) miracle (-s), power, strength, violence, might (wonderful) work.

So the gospel didn't come in just words, it came with the ability to accomplish what it set out to do. And what the gospel sets out to do is not to blow somebody away, not to hurt but to turn someone from heading towards a future of Hell and into the direction of the kingdom of God. To me, a life turned from sin to salvation, is more powerful than any Atomic explosive. It is more powerful than anything I can imagine. It is power unto salvation. It is the power of God.

I wonder, when Paul left Thessalonica dejected, did he realize the sheer power God had left behind? And do you today realize that as you share the gospel with others, that your words and actions contain the very power of God unto salvation? I am often confronted with people who tell me that when they share the gospel with others that they feel inadequate. That their words seem to fail them and they lack confidence. That's not the point; Paul himself was not a man of huge presence. We see in the Old Testament that Moses stammered. The point is; that the words you speak are full of divine promise from the Lord who says that His Holy Spirit will bring to remembrance everything you will need to say. So be encouraged to share the full gospel of Jesus Christ, in word and action, remembering its power to change the most sinful life through the dunamis of Gods Spirit.

What else is the gospel? It came not only in power but also in the Holy Spirit. The gospel came in His fullness, bearing His attributes and characteristics. Why? Because it was their gospel and they were filled with the Pentecost power of the Holy Ghost.

The Holy Ghost was part and parcel of everything they did. It was the Holy Ghost who prompted Paul through a vision to take the gospel to Macedonia in the first place and it was the Holy Ghost who plays the major role in the gospels power and purpose.

The gospel of Jesus Christ will bear the characteristics of the one who empowers it. So what are these Holy Ghost characteristics of their gospel?

He, the Spirit, is the immediate source of all life.

Genesis 2v7, And Jehovah God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Isaiah 32v 15, until the Spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness become a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be esteemed as a forest.

Psalm 104 v 29. Thou hidest thy face,they are troubled; Thou takest away their breath, they die, And return to their dust. 30 Thou sendest forth thy Spirit, they are created; And thou renewest the face of the ground.

He played an important part in Christ's incarnation. In other words, He makes Christ known to men. He doesn't speak of Himself but of Him who sent Him.

John 16:13-15; Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare it unto you. 15 All things whatsoever the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he taketh of mine, and shall declare It unto you.

He is the revealer of divine truth.

John 14 v 26; But the Comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my

name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you.

It is He who moves upon the hearts and consciousness of men and women, giving a measure of light.

John 16 v 8-11; And he, when he is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and ye behold me no more; 11 of judgment, because the prince of this world hath been judged.

It is He who convicts men of sin and aids them to repentance and faith.

Romans 8 v 14-16; For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For ye received not the spirit of bondage again unto fear; but ye received the spirit of

adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit himself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are children of God:

Paul's gospel was a Holy Spirit gospel. He brought life out of death. He brings men and women to Jesus. He reveals Christ's truth and convicts of sin resulting in salvation. It was the Holy Ghost that turned the situation in Thessalonica around and it is the Holy Ghost who will also aid your witness for Him.

We see that their gospel came in conviction. The Greek for conviction is 'Plerophoria' and is described by Vine as 'Assurance'. It also carries the meaning of abundance and entire confidence and another scholar describes the word as 'perfect certainty'. Strong puts it this way

play-rof-or-ee'-ah ; from (4135) (plhrofore>w); entire confidence: " ” (full) assurance.

What we are seeing here is the resulting character of the faith enjoyed by the Apostles when they shared their gospel, they shared it with a full conviction and certainty of its truth and life. ‚   Sometimes we will gladly talk of Christ's love and the benefits; but when we speak of 'following' Jesus, persecution, discipline and taking up our cross daily, we somehow become uncertain of the gospels ability to make the journey, it's an unpopular message in today's pop culture church.

Let's not tone down the gospel in our daily witness. Let's not present only the sugary bits in a tepid weak way. Let's show some conviction, that we believe it to be true, the hard bits as well.

A friend of mine was a salesman. He said to me once "I love selling a product I believe in, because my natural conviction and candidness comes through and it becomes easy to sell it warts and all". What I want to ask is "Do you believe in the product?" or after years in Christ, do you remain unconvinced of the gospels qualities? The world is looking for conviction, for assurance. "Light without heat" is useless in the winter and can I ask; does the world enjoy the heat of our assurance of Christ through the dark cold winter of these last days?

We've seen that the Apostles took ownership of the gospel. It was their gospel. It played a role in their lives that demonstrated itself in action, in discipleship and not merely empty words or just reasoning. We seen how it came in power and in the Holy Spirit and finally in full conviction.

Let me ask, is this the gospel we proclaim? Is this the gospel we believe in?

John Wesley said that next to the doctrine of Salvation in importance was the doctrine of assurance. Remember the hymn-

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine.

O what a foretaste of glory divine

Heir of salvation, purchase of God

Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

This was not one of Wesley's hymn's but a powerful hymn anyway.

How is your assurance? How is your conviction? Is it dependant on mushy feelings and sentimentality? Or is it grounded in a very real knowledge of the power of Christ's gospel- Power in action.

EBYOWN

The kids are looking forward to the end of year break with no visitors to our home. The only person visiting will be Uncle Jacob and he is more family than visitor. This month we will see my son Aaron and his Fianc ƒ © moving back to the UK to start work and prepare for marriage. It's always sad to see family move away but life goes on as it must and I am sure others will come along side us in the near future.

The children are all fine health wise. We have blood tests coming up in the early new year and we are expecting good CD4 counts and viral loads.

Paulina's operation is still on hold due to the late arrival of a letter from Child welfare. We hope however that early in the new year the procedure to remove a piece of bone that is causing all the problems will be removed.

Ebyown Further Afield

I first met Pastor Norbert and Pastor Moses while on mission in Naivashu Kenya, a small town some 90 miles from Nairobi. A small team of us had gone to visit some orphanages and speak at a couple of venues. Previous to that we had been contacted by these two godly men and one of them was recommended to us by a Calvary chapel missionary from Scotland. So it was with much excitement that we had a meal together and got to know each other a little more. There were several things that impressed me about them. The first was their godliness. Secondly was their humility and thirdly both men had travelled hundreds of miles from remote rural areas to share this meal with us. And finally there was no ulterior motive about our new friendship, something that is quite common in Africa I am afraid.

It was soon apparent that these two men would be good candidates for working with Moriel Missions and I was quiet taken aback by their zeal and enthusiasm towards mission and meeting the needs of widows and orphans. Both areas as you know are dear to the heart of Moriel missions. But the question was "how could we work togeher? What could we do to help these men? After all Moriel is not a large organization by any means and resources for the work we do can be hard to come by. But God being God, He had different plans for our relationship and would provide the resources for us. My first endeavor was to communicate with Norbert and Moses that Mission need not be done the way traditional mission had been done by western missionaries. But that in fact we should be focusing on raising up godly leaders from within the nation. That building programs need not be essential, the church has not had a building of its own for the first 250 years and that maybe the churches in Kenya and Tanzania should focus on house churches or simple structures made of local material or even tents. With this philosophy in mind, Norbert and Moses have made huge in roads and now Moriel fellowships are active and alive in many provinces in Tanzania, Kenya and even branching out to Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda. People are being saved, disciples and orphans fed and nurtured.

In February, I will be going to see the work in progress. Moriel Tanzania has been able to get 8 acres of land with another 10 acres in the near future. In Kenya we are purchasing an initial acre with more land to come. What will we be doing with this land? First of all putting up a tent to preach the gospel. Secondly enough land is there to start growing food for a famished area and breed live stock to feed the local widows and orphans. We are feeding 400 in Arusha Tanzania alone. It is my hope that in the future a home can be built to house visiting missionaries from all over the world who can chip in to help Moriel Missions and serve the people of these lands.

Bethesda Project

Dianne Un Hayworth

This will be my last newsletter for the year, I want to thank everyone for your encouragement and support that you have given me over the year.

The gift boxes were all received with big smiles, Hannah, Jonathon, Lorraine and myself took them over to kwezenzele in the combi due to the fact that people can surround you in great numbers. We had a list with the names of the girls who played netball with us and they all received a box each. (17 in total)

The rest went to 6 families in real need who we had formed relationships with over the year. ‚  All the workers of Ebyown received a food parcel with a small gift for their families as well. Due to the fact that the jumpers didn't arrive in time from Aussie Lorraine and myself will go over later in the year with these special gifts.

It is important that I'm not seen as a Santa Clause my aim is to get to know these families and girls on a personal level so I can share the Lord with them.

Many of the girls are reaching the stage of becoming sexually active therefore I would like to be able to speak into there lives before a situation may arise where an abortion is considered an option. I am also very careful not to push the western lifestyle. These kids lead very simplistic lives and I don't want to create a longing for materialistic things that they don't need and have managed fine without.

Many homes on the settlement have veggie gardens which is a wonderful way of feeding their families. I am trying to encourage this with the families I may working along side, we have given out seeds and seedlings so far this year.

I have been able to do this due to the generous gift given to Bethesda by Judith and James who came to visit Ebyown earlier in the year. Thank you and God bless you both

Moriel Missions Italy

Dear Friends

Where has 2007 gone? This year has gone so fast and yet so much has happened. It has been a year of great blessing with the birth of our son, Levi, my brother Aaron got engaged and my best friend Salvador got married. It has also been a year of poor health within my family with my grandfather, father, mother and brother all in ICU consecutively. It has been a year of growth in ministry as I have preached about once a month, conducted our first mission trip to Rome, I ‚  became a deacon at our local church and discipeling a few young men. It has been a year of spiritual growth as I realize more about the relationship between grace and time. The longer time last God's grace abounds with us as He is patient and desires to see men saved. But ‚  time will come to an end and at the end of time is judgment. Even though time is going quickly I am still thankful for the fact we have time and feel the urge more than ever to use it wisely to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. At the same time I desire Jesus to come and take me home.

Update On March 2008 Mission

We are still trying to find accommodation for the mission. The cheapest place we've found in Rome is ‚ £60 per night just for Liz and me. For a 10 day mission that is ‚ £600. ‚  This is more than what we pay for our house per month! We are trying to find alternatives but property is expensive in Rome. We really need the Lord to open doors.

Moriel Mission's College India

Please pray for the following project. After my visit to Vijayawada in India Pastor Chanti the Director of Good News Ministries and I came into agreement that a Missions college under the direction and name of Moriel should be established to train and edify the many pastors in the region who serve the Lord. We are hoping that this will be done next year and are praying that the logistics and costs will be made. Brethren if you have a burden for taining godly people to take the good news to India then please contact me ASAP as we will need to purchase desks, paper, student material, computers, bibles, text books etc.
